Kaifi Azmi was a famous Urdu poet and a well renowned lyricist of Bollywood. He was born on 14th January 1919 in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh. His actual name was Athar Hussain Rizvi. He has been credited to bring urdu literature to Bollywood movies. In 1942 he quit studies and joined the ‘Quit India movement’, a struggle against British to free India. He was a left leaning Marxist and joined progressive writers association, he is considered a stalwart among progressive poets. He passed away on 10th May 2002 in Mumbai, India but left an indelible mark in the hearts of his millions of his fans. He was a recipient of lots of awards; Padmashree, which is one of the Indian Government’s highest civilian awards.
